Market Updates and Industry News

1) Ontario Produce Production Going Strong

Chefs in Toronto take note! In contrast with the last two troublesome years, the 2018 growing season is still going strong for Ontario producers. The Packer reports that despite continued concerns around trade, transport costs and wages, growers have been having a considerably stronger season for produce. If trends continue, these conditions are likely to result in an abundance of availability, which in turn should allow for lower and reasonable prices.

Check it out for a great feature on Ontario produce and cool facts, such as that the region grows nearly 4 pounds of carrots for every Canadian per year.

2) Patio Season

It's not too late to take advantage of patio season, even if you literally don't have a patio. We came across a great article from Menu magazine about maintaining your current patio or, if you're new, jumping right into the game and reaping those incremental sales. Check out advice on pest control, management, permits, and tips how to take advantage of the season if you don't have the physical space.

3) Your Seasonal Special Selections

At ChefHero, along with our suppliers, we watch the growing season like a premium cable mini-series. For chefs with an eye for local ingredients, taking advantage of the best growing conditions and key harvest seasons can be pivotal for getting the best flavours, not to mention prices. We've pulled out a couple of highlights below along with a few of our favorite ideas, but also recommend checking out the Foodland availability guide.

Product Our Favourite Uses
Cherries Cherry Bourbon Sauce; perfect for wings or grilled meats
Asparagus Grilled makes an amazing smokey addition to a cold salad special
